Description
The Carbon Pole for the Cinder Cone is now available! Find it here.

The Cinder Cone elevates the pyramid category with superior ventilation, livability, and setup. It excels everywhere from ambitious ski touring objectives to river trips to ultralight backpacking. The Cinder Cone hits the sweet spot for an ultralight, spacious, and reliable shelter that disappears into your pack when you're on the move.

Our main goal was to create the best-pitching pyramid on the market. We borrowed a reinforcement technique from the parachute industry called Radial Seam Tape, in which we insert a strip of polyester webbing inside all four corner seams to eliminate bias stretch, creating perfectly tensioned side panels and maintaining structural integrity when the nylon elongates in wet conditions.

Another goal was to make the best ventilated pyramid available. Our dual upper thru-vents and large low vent provide more airflow than peak vents, and our novel Perimeter Pull Vents allow the bottom edges to be pulled up in the center, creating a chimney effect when paired with the upper vents that minimizes condensation.

Finally, to make the Cinder Cone the easiest pyramid to set up, we added a Dyneema "Quick-Pitch" cord from corner to corner. The Quick-Pitch cord sets the correct distance between the corners, giving you a perfect pitch every time and avoiding the dreaded "Rhombus". If you've set up a mid before, you get it. The Quick-Pitch cord can be easily unclipped when the tent is in use.

The ALUULA™ top cap reinforcement has the best durability of any lightweight fabric on the market and allows the Cinder Cone to be set up with the Cinder Cone Carbon Pole, ski poles, trekking poles, a kayak paddle, or anything else you can dream up. To set up the Cinder Cone with ski poles or trekking poles, use two of our SlingFin Voile Straps to strap your pole handles together.

The Cinder Cone can be paired with the Cinder Cone Mesh Body for a luxuriously spacious ultralight summer backpacking shelter or with the Cinder Cone Tub Floor for sleeping on wet ground in bug-free conditions.

Winter camping

Went on a spring hunt to the Brooks Range in Alaska. Traveling on skis, the tent fit the bill for a lightweight option! Easy to pitch, recommend at least 8 but 12 stakes is ideal. The extra room was great with the all the winter gear. Wind didn't get over 15mph, but the Cinder Cone was not phased. No issues with condensation, venting options are endless. Spent two nights at 10-15F and will do it again! Great product.

Awesome to hear, Tyler! Fun for us to imagine your Cinder Cone out and about in the Brooks Range. Enjoy the tent and feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions about it!

Perfect Packrafting Shelter

I picked this up last fall specifically to be able to pitch it with a one piece kayak paddle on packrafting trips. Did a few multiday trips including the Rogue and Lower Deschutes where this performed perfectly. The top cap is wide and super reinforced to accommodate the wide paddle blade, which is key. The venting options are brilliant, and the reinforced seams make it pitch tight with very little sag. Stoked on this!

Awesome!! So glad to hear it! I also had a great time on the Rogue in my Cinder Cone- it's an awesome river tent!

Amazing!

I’ve had numerous large pyramid tents over the years, and just when I thought that the Platonic ideal had been achieved and further innovation exhausted, along comes the Cinder Cone! The ventilation is genius. It goes up pitch perfect. Handles wind and weather confidently. My only suggestion: add a top loop for pole-free pitches and post-trip hang-drying!

SlingFin Cinder Cone — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Cinder Cone’s intended use?

In short, pretty much everything. The Cinder Cone defies categorization. It’s strong enough for demanding backcountry ski tours, light enough for backpacking weight weenies, and packable enough for space-conscious bikepackers. The classic use case for the Cinder Cone is as a minimalist shelter on backcountry ski tours or as a group cook tent at alpine basecamps. It excels in any application where strength is important, and you want lots of interior space for minimal weight and packed size. It’s great for self-support kayak and packrafting trips (set it up with your paddle), bikepacking (bring your whole bike inside and yard sale to your heart’s content), backpacking with groups (play cards with all your friends while the storm rages outside), and rafting (fits a cot inside- so posh). Basically, the only time you might not want one of these in your pack is in dense forest where there aren’t tent sites large enough to accommodate the Cinder Cone’s generous footprint. Outside of that… the sky’s the limit.

Do I need poles to set up the Cinder Cone?

The beauty of a pyramid tent is that you can set it up with almost anything. The classic setup preferred by skiers and alpine guides is to use two ski poles lashed together with a pair of Voilé Straps. This also works for hikers with trekking poles. We’ve seen people use sticks, canoe paddles, kayak paddles, skis, etc. If you’re not already carrying a piece of gear that works to set up the Cinder Cone (like bikepackers) we offer a Carbon Pole for the Cinder Cone. Our Carbon Pole has short pole sections and is designed to fit in a bike frame bag or handlebar harness.

Can I use the Cinder Cone year-round?

Yes, the Cinder Cone is a four-season tent and can be used all year. In the summer, we recommend adding the Cinder Cone Mesh Body for protection against bugs and creepy crawlies. Since the Cinder Cone can be set up with or without the mesh, you can use it in just about any set of conditions imaginable.

What is the Quick-Pitch cord and how does it work?

The Cinder Cone features a low-stretch dyneema-core cord across the diagonal of the tent. The hardest part of pitching any pyramid tent is achieving a perfectly square pitch. If you’re off by even a little bit you’ll end up with a distorted rhombus, with two different length diagonals. The Quick-Pitch cord takes out the guesswork by ensuring the diagonal is the correct length and guaranteeing a square pitch. Start by staking the corner at one end of the cord (doesn’t matter which) and then pull the cord just enough to take out the slack and stake the corner diagonally across, where the Quick-Pitch cord ends. Then, pull the other two corners taut and stake them down and you’ll have a nice square pitch every time.

How is the Cinder Cone ventilated?

The Cinder Cone has the best ventilation of any pyramid tent on the market, thanks to three drawstring vents and our new Window Shade Vents. To operate the Window Shade Vents, pull the black cords along the bottom perimeter of the Cinder Cone to pull up the center of the walls, creating a gap between the ground and wall that allows fresh air to be pulled in from the outside. The vents function best when they’re all in use and air can be pulled up and out through the drawstring vents.

What’s special about the Cinder Cone’s zipper?

The Cinder Cone uses a YKK Vislon Aquaguard #3 water resistant zipper. Vislon is YKK’s molded plastic tooth zipper, which holds up to grit and abrasion much better than the coil zippers that are ubiquitous on tents. Vislon zippers are not commonly used on tents, but they’re functionally superior to coil zippers and last significantly longer. They’re also smoother and easier to operate than coil zippers.

Does the Cinder Cone need seam sealing?

No, the Cinder Cone is ready to go! Between the silicone-coated fly fabric combined with the non-wicking thread and double needle seam construction, we have found that the Cinder Cone does not need to be sealed.
